03Tools

  • Miter saw
  • Drill/driver
  • Pocket-hole jig
  • Level
  • Sandpaper

04Build Steps

  1. Cut and chamfer. Cut the rail, lip and back support to length, then chamfer the rail ends slightly for a soft edge.
  2. Build the shelf. Join the rail and lip at a right angle with pocket screws to form a narrow shelf that catches small items.
  3. Mark the hooks. Space five hooks evenly across the rail and pre-drill for the mounting screws.
  4. Mount to the wall. Fasten the back support to the wall into studs, then screw the rack to it and hang the hooks.
  5. Finish. Sand to 220 grit and apply a clear finish or paint.

Safety First

  • Use wall anchors rated for the expected load if no stud is available.
  • Pre-drill oak to avoid splitting.

05Pro Tips

  • Space hooks about 5 in apart so coats hang without crowding.
  • Add a shallow groove in the lip to stop keys sliding off.
